Robots are machines that have the ability to move and perform some basic maneuvers. They are made up of a either metal, wood or toughened plastic. Inside their body is an arrangement of gears, levers, cogwheels, hydraulic parts and other things which make movement possible.
What makes some robots unique is their ability to interact with their environment.
If you want to make a robot of your own then the above mentioned were some important things that you will need to keep in mind while designing your own robot. Apart from them, you will have to provide your robot with power to run all the systems. Some electronic devices to control its movements and make them respond to changing environments would also be excellent.
Hence, in your effort to make a simple robot you would first need either a wooden, plastic or metal box which will house all the systems of your robot. Ideally, you should choose a lighter material but take care that toughness is not compromised.
After that you need some motors to run the various limbs of your robot. You can choose either gearless motors or geared motors. However, it is best that you go for the gearless motors, which are otherwise called servos. You can find them at any local hobby shop or can even get them by cannibalizing your toys.
It is best that you keep the task of your simple robot simple too. Do not intend that it should be able to perform intricate movements. Design its movements in such a manner that they are easy to build and operate. The best movement to focus upon would be its ground movement. Such a type of movement can be easily designed, performed and controlled. Other type of limb movements can be attempted if you know how to design their electronic circuits.
You also need a source of power to run the motors and other electronic devices on board the robot. Choose one which provides sufficient watts of power for ample amount of time. This would ensure that there are no stops and stutters and the robot operates smoothly for sufficient period of time. This might even allow you to participate in any robotic competition as well.
Guidance systems can be an optional thing in your robot. These can be ordinary infra-red sensors that are available easily in the market or delicate electronic gizmos such as motion sensors. Use them if you want your robot to interact with the environment around it.
You can use these items to make a rudimentary robot that would be at least true to its principle. The design and shape that you choose can be anything. Just make sure that it is built with all your hard work. Who knows, some day this may even provide you with the ideas to launch yourself in the big league.
