Robots are a gift offered by the technological revolution that the world has gone through. A robot makes use of several parts to function the way it is used to.
While different robots make use of different parts, there are some common ones that are used in every robotic device. Here are some of them.
Robot sensors
This is one of the most essential components of a robot. In fact, this is the powerhouse of a robot. It is robot sensors that actually determine the intelligence of a robot. Different robots contain different sensors. While a particular robot may make use of 1-2 sensors, there are others that may include up to 6 sensors or more.
It is these sensors that enable the robot to detect elements in the surrounding environment. This information is then sent to the controller. The controller processes this information and makes an appropriate decision. There are different kinds of sensors that may be used in a robot. For instance, an ultrasonic sensor may be used to measure distance, sound sensors to detect sounds, light sensors and the like.
Microcontrollers
Microcontrollers are similar to the CPU of a computer. This component works as a brain of the robotic system. These microcontrollers collect, organize and process al the information. After the microcontrollers process all the information, a suitable decision is taken by the robotic device.
Motor
Once the microcontroller has processed all the information, it sends signal to the motor. Now, this motor enables the robot to move and carry all the necessary functions. The motor converts the electrical energy into mechanical energy and helps the robot to move. The microcontroller itself does not have the power to activate physical movement in the robotic device. Different kind of motors may be used in different robotic devices. These motors may vary in terms of the size, function performed and the power they can generate.
Mechanical parts
Besides the key components, several other parts are also need to put the robot device together. These parts are classified under the umbrella term of mechanical parts. Some of the common parts used in mechanical robots include gear boxes, fames, grippers, tracks, connectors, motor mounts, wheels and the like. The choice of these parts depends upon the objective of the robotic device.
Power systems
Most of the robots or robotic devices available in the market need a batter to function properly. These batteries may differ from one robot to the other. For instance, a particular robot may make use if a nickel metal hydride battery, while the others may use a lithium ion battery. Several other batteries that may be used in robots include alkaline or lead acid batteries.
